La Universidad se dedica a la formación de profesionales con valores humanísticos, competitivos e innovadores
Parece que fue ayer, pero han pasado más de tres décadas desde que empezó el sueño de un grupo de docentes e intelectuales visionarios, como Yolanda Peralta Chávez, Víctor Raúl Lozano Ibáñez, Alfonso Villanueva Vásquez, Lorenzo Santillán Castillo, Luis Sánchez Vásquez, Luis Gorritti Sánchez, Edú Cabanillas Barrantes, José Veneros Chávez y Pedro González Cueva, que preveían el futuro de la región y su potencial para ofrecer profesionales que, con la formación adecuada, serían los motores del desarrollo liberteño y nacional.
Así surgió la idea de crear una universidad vinculada a la gesta del conocimiento, de forjar profesionales con talento y calidad académica, pero también con actitudes humanísticas, siempre dispuestos servir a la población y satisfacer sus necesidades.
De esta manera, un 26 de julio de 1988 se promulga la Ley N.o 24879, que crea la Universidad Privada Antenor Orrego UPAO, con las carreras profesionales de Ingeniería Civil, Ingeniería Electrónica, Ingeniería Agrónoma, Ingeniería de Computación y Sistemas y Arquitectura.
En 1990, el Congreso de la República promulgó la Ley N.o 25168, que amplía la cobertura de la formación profesional con las carreras de Obstetricia, Educación Inicial, Derecho y Ciencias de la Comunicación; y cuatro años más tarde, esto se institucionaliza por acuerdo de la Asamblea Nacional de Rectores (ANR).
Han pasado 34 años desde su fundación. Desde entonces, la Universidad Privada Antenor Orrego (UPAO) ha sido cuna de talentos y profesionales con calidad académica, dotados de las capacidades para solucionar los problemas de su entorno y promover el crecimiento y desarrollo de su sociedad.
Durante este tiempo, la UPAO ha mantenido en todo momento un alto nivel de liderazgo y de cuidado de la calidad de sus procesos en la macrorregión norte del país. Además, su proyección hacia la excelencia docente y profesional es una aptitud y actitud sostenibles que la Alta Dirección tiene para garantizar un futuro de éxito.
Con ocho facultades y diecinueve programas de estudio, la UPAO es una institución con un prestigio reconocido a nivel nacional y en el extranjero, y mantiene una posición de influencia profesional indiscutible en el sector académico-científico del Perú. (CGG/RRC – PRENSA UPAO).
